Why Not Women?!

It is undeniable that women are half of the society and raise the other half. For any issue faced by society, women’s contribution is a crucial element of making dramatic changes that certainly affect the entire community.

In some countries, sunshine keeps averting women’s eyes. Yemen is one of those countries in which women’s rights were being violated and denied; therefore, we had to choose a category of youths to plant hopeful seeds of change in society.

A workshop on gender roles and women’s participation was held on Tuesday, March 14th, 2017 which targeted 50 participants in two different locations; New Horizons, which included 30 participants disaggregated 15 males, 15 females & WOGOOD Foundation, which included 20 participants disaggregated 13 males, 7 females. The workshop was implemented and organized in Aden by a group of youths belonging to WOGOOD Foundation for Human Security in partnership with Relief and Development Peer Foundation (RDP) on the occasion of International Women’s Day on March 8th. The reason why this workshop was done is to target university and school students as well as active youth initiatives in the community. On the concept of gender and its roles and issues related to it.

In addition to the convention on the elimination of all forms of discrimination against women “CEDAW”. The workshop contributed significantly to demonstrate such new concepts that went completely over their heads. Therefore, participants had got to be aware of the new concepts so that they could work on them. Targeting initiatives comes within the framework of improving and strengthening the role they play in society because of their importance. This workshop in fact was among the programs to develop the capacity of youth initiatives in the community.

The workshop reviewed the concept of gender and the difference between gender and sex as well as focusing on the importance of gender mainstreaming in the role played by gender in society such as reproductive, productive, community and political role. There was a work of groups and a deep discussion about obstacles and solutions for women’s active participation and gender mainstreaming of women’s roles in their societies.

The workshop ended after an agreement was reached to do a joint work plan between the initiatives about the concepts that were discussed in the workshop.
